Louis Roman

August 21, 1916 — October 30, 2013

Former WWII 101st Airborne veteran, Louis Roman, age 97, passed on to be with the Lord, Wednesday, Oct. 30, 2013 at The Neighborhood Memory Care Unit in Tellico Village, Loudon, TN.
Friends may call Friday from 5:30 to 7 at Roberts Funeral Home- Sherwood Chapel, Wooster. Services honoring Louis Roman will be held 11:00 AM Saturday, Nov. 2 at the funeral home, with interment to follow in Sherwood Memorial Gardens with full military rites. Contributions in memory of Mr. Roman may be made to Hospice of North Central Ohio, 1050 Dauch Dr. Ashland, Ohio 44805.
Louis was born Aug. 21, 1916 in Wayne County, Ohio. He lived most of his life in Hayesville, Ohio, before moving to Tennessee with his daughter in 2012. He was the son of Andrew and Susan Roman and married to Fern Sampsel Roman.
Louis graduated from Chester Township High School and Wooster College in 1941.
He then served his country in the Army, promoted to 2nd Lieutenant, Company D of the 502 Battalion. Roman parachuted behind German lines in Normandy, helped to hold Bastogne, and related many accounts of near misses. After the war, he began a 35-year career as a bricklayer and member of union Local 40 B.A.C. where he often was a bricklayer foreman. "Louie" helped build many new schools, college additions and businesses throughout Ohio as well as his Hayesville home. An avid sportsman, he bowled competitively until age 93 and fished often, receiving a "Fish Ohio" award.
Loving husband, father, and grandfather, Louis is survived by his son, Roger (Bonnie) Roman, Wooster, OH; daughter, Melinda (Larry) Strang, Loudon, TN; grandchildren, Tad Roman, Leanna Roman Duncan, Roger Roman, Diana Roman Winchell, Andrea Roman, Scott Fisher, John Fisher, Jeff Fisher, Holly Fisher, Kristi Strang Gooden, Lance Strang and Matthew Strang; 11 great grandchildren; 2 step great grandchildren and one great-great grandchild.
Louis was preceded In death by his parents, wife of 44 years, Fern; daughter, Susan Roman Fisher; brothers, Andy and Steven; sisters, Esther, Rose, Betty and Ethel.
