Mary Bailey

October 13, 1941 — March 14, 2015

Mary Ann (Swift) Bailey died March 14th, peacefully at home, surrounded by loved ones, after a valiant 5 year battle with cancer.

Mary Ann was born October 13, 1941 in Racine, Wisconsin, to Mary (Kruge) and Clinton Swift, but spent most of her young life and graduated high school in Woodbury, Connecticut. Mary Ann attended Waterbury Hospital School of Nursing, Connecticut (RN), Goddard College, Vermont (BA) and Case Western Reserve University, Ohio (MA).

She is survived by her loving husband, favorite traveling partner and devoted caretaker, Jon. She was also the best mother and grandmother to 3 daughters and 6 grandchildren whom she loved to spoil: Carol (husband David Waterman, children Craig and Avery), Susan (husband Kelly Schmidt, children Luke and Logan) and Barbra (husband Dan Stevens, children Jack and Cora). Four supportive siblings: Carol Stinson, Clint Swift, Ed Swift, Rod Swift and their spouses, and many wonderful nieces, nephews and extended family members will also miss her dearly.

Mary Ann loved helping others. In her professional life, Mary Ann worked in the expansive field of nursing, she retired as the Director of Nursing and Patient Services at Wooster Community General Hospital after 24 years. She was a member of the American Nurses Association and the Ohio Organization for Nurse Executives for which she also served as president in 1998 and was the recipient of the 2000 Excellence in Nursing Award. Mary Ann was also the 2004 recipient of the Annual Wayne County Women's Network Athena Award which recognizes a local woman who is an inspiration to the community.

Mary Ann cared for others in community as well, through service work with Every Woman's House of Wooster, The Startzman Free Clinic, and on the boards of Life Care Hospice of Wayne County (Board President), Habitat for Humanity in Wayne County (National Volunteer of the Year), and People to People Ministries in Wooster.

Mary Ann was very active in her church, Trinity United Church of Christ in Wooster. Over the years, she was a dedicated member/moderator of the Church Consistory, Worship Committee, Finance Committee and Renovation Committee. Mary Ann was also a committed Lay Reader, Parish Nurse and involved with Trinity's mission work.

In retirement, Mary Ann loved traveling and spending her summers in North Haven, Maine where she helped run a family gift and frame shop. Mary Ann kept Hallmark in business, never forgetting a holiday, birthday or thank you, she always had a book in her purse. She worked towards equality, and taught many to love nature and be thankful.

Life for Mary Ann would not have been as bright without some very loyal friends including Pat Petsch, Jeanne McCarter, Donna Brown, Judi Foote, Gretchen Foran, Ruth Buchanan, Jean Schmidt and Nina Barnes. The family would like to thank the nurses, support staff and Dr. Stallings at Trilogy Cancer Care for providing years of loving care and Life Care Hospice for compassionate end of life care.
