Listen to Obituary

James Clayton Smith, 70, of West Salem, Ohio, passed away peacefully on December 30, 2025 at home surrounded by his family.

He was born October 7, 1955 in Congress, Ohio to Albert Charles and Julia Ann {Peacock} Smith.

Jim “Smitty” was a 1974 graduate of Northwestern High School.

Jim led a life defined by hard work, versatility, and a commitment to providing for his loved ones. A true jack-of-all-trades.

Jim was known for his strong hands and a can-do spirit. His career path was a testament to his industrious nature, having applied his skills in the demanding fields of construction, on the open road as a Truck Driver, and in bringing beauty to the outdoors through landscaping. Jim approached each new job with integrity and determination, leaving a mark of quality on every project he undertook.

Jim enjoyed vacationing with children and grandchildren to the beach every year with Daytona Beach being his favorite.

Jim cherished the freedom of the open road riding his Harley as often as possible, even all the way to Florida. When he wasn’t riding his Harley, he found joy behind the wheel of his sports car.

Among his favorite memories were the many times spent with his grandchildren on the back of his motorcycle, and the many times out on the lake with the boat, tubing and water skiing with his children. Their smiles and laughter and the complete trust shared created an unbreakable bond and memories that will last a lifetime.

James will be deeply missed by his children Tayler Kramer, Tiffany (Zack) King, Tyler Smith, Trever Smith, Jennifer Smith, and Christopher Smith; grandchildren Emma, Koda, Kason, Kai, Gunnar, Kadyn, Brycen, Kylie, and Callie; and brothers Dan (Tiffany) Smith, and Dennis (Shelly) Smith

James was preceded in death by his granddaughter Ellie Mae King, and his parents.

Funeral services will be Friday January 9 at 2 p.m. at Roberts Funeral Home-Sherwood Chapel, Wooster (and livestreamed at www.RobertsFuneralHome.com/obituaries/James-Smith).
