Joan Lee Alkyer (nee Frame) passed away peacefully in her sleep at home in Stow, Ohio, on May 30. She was 88.
Born in Barberton, Alkyer grew up in southern Ohio before returning to Barberton to complete high school. A beloved mother, grandmother and great grandmother, Alkyer enjoyed her career in the grocery industry working for Buehler’s in Wadsworth, Kroger’s in Austintown, the Newport Deli in Boardman and managing in-store product demos for Giant Eagle. She worked until the age of 79 because she loved the community and customers she met each day.
A devoted Christian, Alkyer was a dedicated member of the First Christian Church of Stow, often helping out in the kitchen or “tying” blankets for those in need. When she could not attend services due to health or weather concerns, you could find her in a comfortable chair following along on her iPad.
Alkyer was sharp and active right up until her final breath. She loved bingo and baking, a good meal, a good adventure and a good laugh. But Grandma Joan loved family even more.
She is survived by her sister Joyce Reynolds (nee Frame) and brother Myron Frame (Robin); daughters Tressa Welch, Beth Ruhrkraut (William) and Julia Alkyer; son Frank Alkyer; grandchildren Larry Smith, Frank Welch, Kara Traylor, Sarah Alkyer and Nathan Ruhrkraut; and great grandchildren Lucas, Logan and Liam Smith.
She was preceded in death by husband Frank Paul Alkyer and her parents Harris and Mary Faye Frame.
Graveside services and burial will be held Thursday, June 5, at 11 a.m. at Hillcrest Memorial Gardens, 9560 Acme Rd., Seville, Ohio. Roberts Funeral Home-Hillcrest Chapel, Seville is assisting with arrangements.
