Listen to Obituary

Pamela K Gerber, 71, passed away on Saturday, August 22, 2026, surrounded by her loving family.

Friends may call on Thursday, August 27 from 10-11 am at the Church of the Cross United Methodist at 5100 Cleveland Road in Wooster. A celebration of Pam’s life will follow at 11am with Pastor John Finn officiating.

Pam was born in 1954 in West Berlin, Germany to Paul and Marilyn Haueter who were there working for United World Missions. The family returned to the US on furloughs and then permanently when she was thirteen. She also lived in Maine, Florida, and eventually Ohio, where she lived the rest of her life.

She married Dale Gerber in 1977. He passed in 2021.

She graduated in 1978 from North Central College in Mansfield and became a registered nurse. She was dedicated to her profession and taking good care of her patients. She especially enjoyed the genuine camaraderie of her fellow nurses, doctors, and staff. Most of her forty year career, she worked at Wooster Community Hospital where she was a surgical nurse.

She volunteered for CAMO (Central American Medical Outreach) and also spent a few years working with a CAMO team as a surgical nurse in Honduras.

She was a supporter of women’s empowerment and the preservation of our democracy and participated as a member of the LOWV (League of Women Voters). She and her family attended Church of the Cross on a Boy Scout Sunday in the early nineties and was so impressed with the friendliness of the church that they soon became members. She continued to attend and volunteer for many years to come.

One of her favorite activities was riding her bicycle, mostly in Ohio and Florida. Recently she had been riding over 1,000 miles per year. Her most memorable trip was riding with a Rails-to-Trails group from Pittsburgh to Washington D.C. She also rode parts of the Erie Canal Trail. She has been part of the Rails-to-Trails of Wayne County for several years, where she enjoyed meeting people who also loved riding the bike trails.

She enjoyed gardening and beautifying her home. Spending time with friends was important but most of all she loved spending time with her family, especially the joy of her life, granddaughter Ellie.

For several years she drove a convertible VW that made her feel ten years younger and put a smile on her face. Through the years she was blessed to take many family vacations where she and Dale shared their love of nature and the outdoors by hiking, skiing, and snorkeling. She shared her love of travel with others through photography. She and Dale enjoyed many trips exploring new places. Favorites included Alaska, Costa Rica, Panama, Hawaii, and the Caribbean islands.

Preceded in death by grandparents Nicholas and Beulah Goulding, Roland and Almeda Haueter, parents Paul and Marilyn Haueter, and husband Dale Gerber. Survived by children Will (Cait) Gerber, and Katie Gerber; brother Jon (Candy) Haueter; sister-in-law Portia Wilson; nephew Milan Sigler; and granddaughter Ellie Gerber.

Charitable contributions can be made to Church of the Cross, 5100 Cleveland Rd, Wooster, OH 44691 ; CAMO, 322 Westwood Ave, Orrville, OH 44667 or Rails-to-Trails of Wayne County, PO Box 1566, Wooster, OH 44691.
