Patricia McVay Gorrell, 72, of Shreve, Ohio passed away peacefully on Tuesday, December 9, 2025, surrounded by her loving family.
Patti was born on June 19, 1953, in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania to proud parents Don and Helen (Snyder) McVay. She was a devoted mother, a creative spirit, and a resilient woman who poured love into everything she did. She raised her daughters Christi and Heather with strength and care, supported the arts, and built a joyful life alongside her beloved husband Mike.
Her 30-year career at the College of Wooster Andrews Library reflected that same dedication. Starting in the AV department, she rose to lead digital collections and the computer lab through persistence, curiosity, and integrity. She nearly completed an early childhood education degree, stopping only when clinical hours conflicted with work. Yet her ultimate impact was mentoring students many of whom lovingly called her “Mom.” She welcomed them into her life, especially those far from home, hosting holidays, birthdays, and summer picnics so no one felt alone. She especially cherished the family beach trips to Rehoboth and Wild Dunes. For nearly 40 years, the extended family gathered under one roof and celebrated the simple joy of being together. Patti believed all the kids were “everyone’s kids,” and her steady, generous love helped anchor the tradition.
Her greatest joy was being “Grandma.” She and Mike visited Tyler and Ally every Sunday playing trains and basketball, beauty shop and dance party, and the all-time favorite, hide-and-seek. Her grandchildren made her world turn and her love for them was boundless
She was, in every way, like the marigolds she loved to plant; bright, protective, and deeply rooted in love.
She is survived by husband, Mike Gorrell, daughters Christi Rowekamp (Jeff), and Heather Johnson, grandchildren Tyler and Ally, siblings, Janine Collette (Mike), James D McVay Jr., Julie McVay (Eric Mooradian), along with nieces and nephews she loved like her own children, Matt, Jacob, and Rachel. Friends may call from 10 to 11:30am on Friday, December 12 at Roberts Funeral Home-Sherwood Chapel, Wooster. A memorial service will follow at 11:30am at the funeral home.
