Ramona “Mona” Morrison, 96, of Ashland died Tuesday February 24th at UH Samaritan Hospital. Mona was born October 27, 1929, in Edmond, WV, the daughter of Robert Allport and Beulah Kathryn (Skaggs) Allport. Mona’s early years were challenging, as this was the beginning of the Great Depression and her father passed away when she was only a year old. Her mother had to find work in Washington, DC to support the family and Mona was raised by her grandparents (“Mom and Pop” John and Mary Skaggs) in Ansted, WV. She never complained and often spoke very highly of her childhood. Mona loved West Virgina and her family!
She enjoyed reading and going to school and met her husband, (William “Bill” Morrison), as a junior in high school. Bill and Mona were married in June of 1947 after her high school graduation and lived 71 wonderful years together. They lived in the Florida Keys, Miami, FL, and Sandusky, OH, before making Ashland their lifelong home after the birth of their only child (Sandra) in 1951. Mona worked for Harold Motors (later Bob Pugh Chrysler) and retired from the State of Ohio Unemployment Services Office. She was a member of Peace Lutheran Church for decades and recently attended King Road Christian Church.
Mona’s true passion was her family, especially her grandchildren and great grandchildren. She enjoyed caring for them and attending all of their activities. She was front and center for many Football, Soccer, Basketball, and school events. In her eyes her family was perfect, and she was a great encouragement for them all. She was a very proud grandmother, often commenting, “They take after me!”
Mona lived her life based on the values she grew up with – God, Family and Service. She was deeply connected to her community, helping and volunteering at the American Legion, the Food Bank, and various charities. Mona celebrated the simple things in life, like bingo and playing cards with friends until the wee hours of the morning, good meals, family reunions, camping and anything with laughter!
Mona was preceded in death by her husband (Bill), her sister (Marjorie Capo), and brothers-in-law Bob Morrison and Paul Massey. She is survived by her daughter Sandra Carpenter (Gary), grandsons Jon Shoemaker (Monja), Jamison Sloan (Liz), and Chris Carpenter, granddaughter Beth Carpenter and her brother Frank Herr (Mary Ann), sisters-in-law Barbara Massey and Joyce Morrison and 12 great grandchildren Brooke Vizza, Cole Shoemaker, Baylee Hinch, Carl, Faye-Marie, and Sonora Sloan, Jordan, Garrett, Sydni, and Evan Carpenter, Tori Cole, and Bella Droll.
