Terry L. Hoover (1943 - 2020)

Margaret Solsky Hoover, 74, passed away on April 5, 2021 at her home in Massillon, Ohio.  She was born on January 23, 1947 to the late Raphael Solsky and Beatrice V. Solsky (Clark) in Columbus, Ohio.

Margaret, who was fondly referred to as “Maggie” or “Mag” in high school, grew up in Columbus.  She graduated in 1965 from Ohio State University School where she and her classmates were taught by faculty from The Ohio State University.  Margaret enjoyed expressing her inner creative through theater, modern dance and art.  When she attended The Ohio State University, she majored in theater, and she performed with the school’s Stadium Theater Players.

Terry L. Hoover, 77, passed away on November 4, 2020 in Canton, Ohio.  He was born on January 6, 1943 to the late Homer Hoover, Sr. and Mary Hoover (Griffiths) in Wooster, Ohio.  In high school, he had a special interest in theater and play production.  Terry graduated from Wooster High School in 1961.  He went on to graduate with a B.A. in Business Administration from The Ohio State University in 1967.

Margaret and Terry’s romance began in December of 1965.  The two Ohio State students met, fell in love and later married in 1969.  Their first adventure as a young married couple took them to Trumansburg, New York where Terry managed a college book store in Ithaca, and Margaret pursued her passion for the theater and created a business selling her crafts.

In 1988, Margaret and Terry’s journey took them to Mt. Pleasant, Michigan, the home of Central Michigan University.  During their time there, Terry went to the University of Michigan and received his master’s degree from the School of Library and Information Studies.  With his specialization in Archives Administration, he was hired as the Archivist in the Research Center at Henry Ford Museum & Greenfield Village (now The Henry Ford) in 1993.  This new pursuit took Margaret and Terry to Farmington Hills, Michigan.  In 1994, Margaret joined the staff in the Registrar’s Office at the museum where she assisted in the digitization of museum records and images and aided in the artful storytelling of the evolution of The Henry Ford.

For more than two decades, Margaret and Terry, who retired as the Chief Archivist for the Benson Ford Research Center, made significant professional contributions to and left a lasting impression at The Henry Ford.  They retired in 2015 and are remembered for their dedication, service, attention to detail, professionalism, humor, the creation of Monday Night Movies for volunteers and staff and so much more.

In 2015, Terry and Margaret purchased a home in Massillon, Ohio, and slowly improved it over the next few years. While they were making improvements to their home, they continued to be members of the Great Lakes Cinephile Society.  For more than four decades, they shared their love of cinema with people, organized and ran film festivals in New York, Michigan and Ohio.  Prior to their retirement, they were members of the Syracuse Cinephile Society as well and organized many of their cinema programs.

Margaret and Terry were a loving couple who were dedicated to each other for fifty-five years.  In each step along their path, they shared their keen intellects, humor, laughter, love of all things Halloween, generosity, love of cats, passion for the cinema and their mad storytelling skills with others.  They believed in preserving the past for future generations.

Now that they are reunited, it is easy to picture them setting up a silent film reel, getting the pianist settled off to the side, popping popcorn and asking their loved ones, friends and anyone who would like to attend to take their seats because the show is about to begin.

Terry is survived by his brother Homer Hoover, Jr. and his sister Agnes Bowers.  Margaret is survived by her niece Ann Hadley, nephew Michael Filsinger (wife Julianne Hutchinson and daughter Myranda).  Margaret was predeceased by her sister Jeanette Filsinger (Solsky) and her brother-in-law David Filsinger who was her friend and confidante.  They are survived by countless loving friends.
