Bert E. Payne, 62, of Fredericksburg, died Sat., May 9,2009, at his residence in Fredericksburg after an extended illness. Friends may call Thursday from 6 to 8p.m. at Roberts Funeral Home- Sherwood Chapel, Wooster. Funeral services will be Friday at 2 p.m. at the funeral home with Pastor Keith Peachy officiating, friends may call one hour prior. Burial will be at Sherwood Memorial Gardens, where military rites will be held. Online tributes may be made at www.robertsfuneralhome.com .



Bert was Born March 5, 1947, in Ashland, Ohio to Norman Robert and Almedia{} Payne.He lived in Wayne and Ashland County area for most of his life and served in the U.S. Army and stationed in Germany.



He married Karen (Van Zile) Westover on November 29, 1986.



Bert worked for Apple Creek Development Center for 17 years and hauled the Amish the last few years before his illness began. He was very active in the Gold Wing Riders Association. Serving in many different offices including Chapter Director for two years. He started the annual Teddy Bear Ride to Wooster Hospital 10 years ago for the children on the pediactrics floor. He was also active in the Fredericksburg Ruritan and he rode his Gold Wing Motorcycle in the Fredericksburg parade almost every year. Also active in PWP where Bert and Karen met.



Bert will be deeply missed by his mother and wife; children Amanda Ross of Herkimer, New York, Heather Payne (Bruce Bolles), Joe (Jacie) Westover both of Wooster, and Melissa (Russ) Kamps of Parma, grandchildren Preston Payne, Cienna Bolles, Taylor and Brandon Ross, Dylan and Kymberlee Boggs, Jacob and C.J. Westover, Alex Patterson, Nick, Sarah, and Emily Kamps, brothers Jerald Payne and Tom Payne both of Wooster, and Steve (Diana) Payne of Mt. Morris, Michigan.



Bert was preceded in death by his father, son Jason Payne, sister Lydia Smith, sister-in-law Pauline Payne and great niece Carrie Payne.
